Women’s Equality Day 2021

On Women’s Equality Day 2021, women in the U.S. and around the world, including technology professionals, are celebrating the strides made towards equality. There is still so much more that needs to be done, but recognizing the strength, courage, and perseverance of women since the 19th century is important to lift up. There are amazing women who are breaking glass ceilings and transforming what inclusion looks like when it comes to women in STEM and in STEAM.
Our founder and CEO, Alaina Percival, has a track record of creating pathways for women to reach equality in technology. We can lean on her goodworks and her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion when it comes to a future filled with more women entering the field of technology, and navigating their way to executive positions. Women Who Code serves as a prime example of what that looks like as we continue to provide job opportunities on our jobs board, resources through technical skills and career-building events, and partnerships where women are leading and positioned to thrive.
The effort to achieve global equality through our work is also important. We have reached women in 134 countries and counting around the world including London, Berlin, Delhi, Manila, Tokyo, and Recife. It will take continued efforts, education, and focus for inequality to be something of the past.
Four ways you can help women achieve equality and equity in tech, and beyond:
- Mentor Women
Choose one or a group of women at your organization or business and mentor them. Provide them with the knowledge, information, and skills that help them elevate. This also helps your organization grow with diversity at its foundation.
- Support Women
It is that simple. The more support women receive the more the numbers will increase regarding women who enter the tech workforce and succeed. Supporting is helpful to the future of tech and seeing more women of all skills and ethnic backgrounds advancing in their careers.
- Announcing your appreciation of Girl Power
This leans into supporting women. When young girls or ladies are recognized for their Girl Power, that gives them the lift and courage they need to go further. Recognizing Girl Power is one of the best things you can do to empower and impact women. This can look like internships, offering scholarships, job shadowing, and encouraging STEM in extra curricular activities to name a few.
- Edit the book-shelf and online reading
Buy, read, and support women in tech who have published books, blogs, articles, and other content they’ve contributed to the industry. Adding books by women in tech will help you understand your role in uplifting and empowering the women who you work with or employ. Learn from their experiences and knowledge. This will help balance out the environment at your workplace and let the women know you respect them as thought leaders and the talents, gifts, and abilities they contribute to the team.
Women’s Equality Day is a time to honor all of the women and their efforts in the national and global workforce. Focusing on equity in places of business, brings society closer to equality for women. Incorporating these actions as a standard for your organization will make equality in the workplace for women a reality.
